The holidays remind us to be grateful for the important people in our lives (at work and at home), and to find reasons to celebrate them. Don’t limit these sentiments to just the holiday season.
This week we continue our theme of thanking and appreciating with a particular focus on employee competence; when people feel competent, they contribute in a more significant way and feel more appreciated for their performance. Use the holidays as a time to reconnect your to the spirit of thanking and celebrating; it will make for an incredible 2009.
Thank and celebrate tip: Spend time with an employee with a resource like Strengthsfinder 2.0 by Tom Rath. This helps define the employee’s strengths and talents. These are the areas in which the employee has the greatest potential to perform. Help the employee feel competent by realigning his/her role to accommodate his/her talents.

Thank and celebrate tip: To help an employee develop competence and to feel appreciated, sit with the employee and create a skills development plan. Determine what education is needed and insure the employee has the ability to complete the education. The attention and customized focus shows the employee he/she is appreciated in the workplace. The education helps the employee feel competent in his/her role.

We’ll use the month of December to present ways (that can be implemented all year) to thank and celebrate people (at work and at home). In today’s intellectual workplace, employees want and need to be appreciated and celebrated. It impacts their performance and loyalty. Use the holidays as a time to reconnect your spirit of thanking and celebrating; it will make for an incredible 2009. And practice these at home – your loved ones will love you more.
Thank and celebrate tip: Include others. One of the best ways to show your gratitude and to celebrate others is to include them. At work, ask what they think and why, allow them to take over a project, or to lead an event. At home, bring your kids to work, take them on errands with you, ask for their input in daily family living. Included people feel valued and appreciated.

We’ll use the month of December to present ways (that can be implemented all year) to thank and celebrate people (at work and at home). In today’s intellectual workplace, employees want and need to be appreciated and celebrated. It impacts their performance and loyalty. Use the holidays as a time to reconnect your spirit of thanking and celebrating; it will make for an incredible 2009. And practice these at home – your loved ones will love you more.
Thank and celebrate tip: Put a small piece of paper with the name of each of your employees (or kids) in your right pocket. During the day, find a reason to thank or appreciate something that each one does. As you do, move the name to the left pocket. By the end of the day, you must have found a (legitimate) reason to thank an employee or kid. You will see a significant change in your relationship with them. It will also inspire you to notice them more during the day.
